Digoo SB-XYA Smart video doorbell review

I get a lot of packages but when I’m at work sometimes a postman delivers by neighbors and sometimes they do not. When I’m able to talk to the postmen I can give permissions to try a neighbor. Currently, I only get photo’s when the doorbell is ringing through the method I describe here. But with a video doorbell I get photo’s video, recording and I’m able to talk. Sound great! So let find out if it really is that great!

Digoo has a free cloud storage for 100 videos! that’s sounds better to me than a monthly subscription.

Expectations

For such a cheap price I didn’t have many expectations. 😛 But I’m still curious.

Test

On the package, I find Digoo DG-XYA but on the video doorbell itself, there is a sticker with Digoo SB-XYA.
Installation of the Digoo video doorbell is very simple, on IOS and Android it’s the same.

• Scan the QR code and download video doorbell app.
• Install, accept permission and create account.
• Press and Hold button on doorbell till the led blinks
• The app ask for your wifi account and password (only supports 2.4ghz).
• Wait about a minute.
• There was a firmware update available (make sure you always using the latest updates).

When pressing the button on the video doorbell the phone rings in 2 seconds and video quality looks fine (1080p) but there was a slight delay.

Motion detection is also another interesting option. it’s not an option for me because my front door is on a busy street so it will record very much and it would also be a battery drain. But you can also open the app and see the video. After a week the battery drained to 44 Percent. the bell was with motion detection and on my dining table 😛

Sometimes establishing a secure video connection took a while. I was near the bell and 4 meters from my router so the connections were not the issue.

Build Quality & Design

The video doorbell is quite big but has a minimalistic look. The doorbell  feels solid. You mount the bell on the ground plate and have to screw the bel on the plate.
The button gives no feedback but you hear the ring sound 

Home automation compatible?

The protocol is wifi and bluetooth and I didn’t find a way yet to connect it to Domoticz or Home-assistant.
I’m still looking for a way to integrate the Digoo into my home automation platform, because then I can turn on lights and use extra speakers as ringers. I hope with Wireshark or another tool to catch traffic from doorbell or phone something must be possible. To be continued.

Complementary Products / Alternatives

Price quality

For this price it would be hard to get a better product. For sure the ring pro is smaller, and I expect better but hey, a much higher price and a monthly contribution for storing the videos.

Verdict

As I wrote before, I noticed a little delay, but walking to the door took longer. The price is good and especially with the cloud storage.
I think the Android software there is a little room for improvement (Connection establishing speed). And the last thing that I do not know yet: How long will do the batteries when the doorbell is outside in heat of cold temperatures.
