Living in a bigger town or city goes unfortunately hand in hand with lesser air quality. This comes because of air pollution by industry and motorized traffic, but sometimes even nature can decrease air quality with dust, sand and pollen. A while ago we already reviewed an Aroma Diffusor that moisturized the air, but now we go a step further: the Alfawise P1 is an air purifier with a fan that has a HEPA filter. Let’s have a look if we can notice if it improves our in-house air quality.

Expectations

Based on our experiences with the brand Alfawise we know these products are also pretty decent but a bit more budget oriented. With their distinctive basic product coding system where the A8 is a TV Box and the S60 is a windows cleaning robot. Most of the Alfawise products are good, some of them are evengreat, but sometimes Alfawise just misses the mark. We hope the Alfawise P1 is another great product.

Packaging

The air purifier comes in a cardboard box with a retail print. Here you see Alfawise is spending more attention to detail: compared to the cardboard boxes they sometimes use this packaging looks attractive. The product itself is carefully packed in sturdy Styrofoam wrapped in plastic.

The package weighs a little bit over 2 Kg and it’s dimensions are 22.00 x 22.00 x 30.80 cm (L x W x H). This will definitely not fit in your mailbox.

What’s in the box

In the box can be found the following:

  • The air purifier
  • A HEPA filter
  • An English manual

Build Quality & Design

The build quality of the Alfawise P1 is good. It is made of hard PPA plastic and every part of it feels solid. Although the purifier it certainly not a piece of distinguished design, it is designed well enough to blend in sufficiently within a room. The only thing that could wear is the builtin fan, the “turbo cyclone”. I’ve used the purifier for a number of weeks and the volume of the fan did not increase during this time. However this could happen when using the purifier over longer period, but due to the HEPA filter less dust will end up in the bearings of the fan.

Heath / Power consumption /Noise

Although it only draws 15W it comes with an 230V power connection. So it requires a power outlet. It has two operation modes that can be toggled by pressing the switch a quiet (33 dB) mode and a more powerful mode that produces 51 dB.

I’ve tested the Alfawise P1 in my bedroom. Keeping the unit running at night in the quiet mode is no problem. However, I won’t recommend placing the purifier on your nightstand next to you. I placed it about 3 meters away from me and although I could hear a very soft humming noise I did not keep me awake at night. I found that I used the powerful mode often for a shorter period to freshen up the room before I went to bed. In this mode the fan is relatively noisy and can be compared to a normal standing fan.

Usability

Operating the Alfawise P1 is very simple, because it only has one button with also has a power indication LED. Above the power button two additional indication LED are placed to indicate the power mode of the fan. When the unit it switched off the power LED colors red. A short press switches the unit on and turns the power LED to white and the first power indication LED on. Pressing the power LED while the unit is on makes the purifier toggle between low and high power mode. A long press switches the powered on unit back off.

Effectiveness is hard to measure

I don’t have any equipment to measure the effectiveness of the device, but I noticed a couple of things: after using the purifier for a while, the number of small dust and hair particles seems to reduce. Also, the purifier greatly reduces the musty smells and odors . Of course, I cannot quantify these observations, but after a number of weeks I sprayed out the HEPA filter with an air duster (Pro Tip: do NOT do this inside your house) and was a bit stunned of the quality of small particles that blew out of the filter. Without the air purifier these particles would still be whirling through your house.

Just like operating the Alfawise P1, replacing the HEPA filter is also a piece of cake. The LED indicator will color red when you need to replace the filter. You just remove the lid on the bottom of the purifier, remove the old HEPA filter and place the new filter.

All these LED’s are bright, and sometimes even too bright when placing the purifier in the bedroom. I ended up placing the front of the purifier against a wall, so the light beam did not light up my complete bedroom. This made the purifier a bit harder to operate, and especially then I noticed I started to miss a remote control or an app to operate and time the purifier. But I realize I should be humble taking into account the price of the P1.

Home automation compatible?

No, unfortunately not.

Complementary Products / Alternatives

Every three months you need to replace the HEPA filter. You can find these here.

pro / cons

pros

  • Price
  • Quiet.
  • Good for small spaces.
  • Energy efficient.

cons

  • Bright LED light cannot be switched off.
  • No remote control via app.

Price quality

The price quality of the Alfawise P1 is very good. Not only is it cheap for an air purifier with this capacity (a small room), the build quality also is very solid. We expect it will keep the air in your room fresh and clean for a long time. The only thing you need to worry about are the additional HEPA filters (like said earlier, require replacement every 3 months) that will set you back about 12 dollars.

Verdict

I think with the Alfawise P1 the brand hit the sweet spot: it is a really good air purifier for a friendly price. The build quality is good, it is near silent and it blends in well in my bedroom. Especially when it is in Flash Sale you will have a definite bargain.

So is it the perfect purifier that cannot be improved? No, the LED indicator is very bright and cannot be switched off. This can be a bit disturbing when using it in the bedroom. Also, it does not measure the air quality nor does it have a remote control (or an app). But adding these features would probably make the device more expensive.
