Xiaomi Mijia Sensor Night Light review
First of all: let me be clear that I am not afraid of the dark! But when I need to go to the toilet during the night I don’t want to slip over stuff I was planning to tidy up the next day (really!). But switching on the main light gives way to much light and brings me out of my sleep even further. And so does adjusting the main light using the Hue app. So I need a simple sensor night light, which switches on when I get near, produces just enough light and switches off after a number of seconds.

I bought the Xiaomi Mijia Sensor Night Light for a little bit less than 10 Euro at Gearbest. The specifications as stated there are:

Expectations
At least I expect that it is a good night sensor light, that switches on based on movements when it is dark. Because the brand is Xiaomi I hope to find a bit more: better than average quality and battery life, a bit higher end sensors and a color temperature that fits a lamp that switches on during the night.
Does it fit your mailbox?

Build Quality & Design
When first holding the sensor night light the top surface feels a bit strange because you don’t expect a flexible ABS material there. However, it still feels solid and makes the unit durable. The rest of the body is made of the hard material polyethylene. The lamp is light but feels and is durable, and the design is slick and subtle enough so you don’t have to hide the lamp out of sight.
Usability
Installing the batteries (not included) is very easy: you slightly turn the back cover of the lamp to unlock it so you can take it off. Then you can insert the three AA batteries. Under the back cover, you also find a sliding switch so you can adjust the brightness of the lamp (two settings). This switch is the only control you can find, so it lacks an on-off switch. To turn off the lamp you have to remove the batteries. The lamp uses 0.25W, which is energy efficient. How long it takes to drain the batteries depends on the type of batteries and how often the light switches on.
On the outside of the backplate a round 3M sticker can be found so you can mount it to any solid surface (vertical, diagonal or upside down). I used the plastic attachment hook so I put the sticker on there so I was able to hang the lamp to any hook, clothing hanger etc. The 3M sticker sticks very well to the surface and in combination with the low weight of the lamp, I won’t expect the sticker will let go without a fight. Removing the attached lamp from a surface like a drywall will probably cause some small damage to the drywall.
The sensor of the light is very well thought out: The 120 degrees wide sensitivity and the about 7-meter depth of sensitivity work very well. When installing it in medium sized hallway you will get ‘noticed’ quickly.
Only an outer ring of the front of the nightlight produces the light. The color temperature (2700K) and two brightness settings (0.7Lm, 3.8Lm) are perfect for a night light. Don’t expect enough light to be able to pluck your eyebrows, but it is sufficient to navigate through a room and to do some basal tasks like brushing your teeth. When you are out of sight of the sensor, the light will switch off after about 15 seconds.
pro / cons
pros
- Two brightness settings
- Sensor does its job well: 120 degrees and up to 7 meters makes
- Very energy efficient
cons
- No batteries included.
- No on-off switch.
Price quality
There are cheaper options, but this optimized and energy efficient night sensor light is worth the money.
Verdict
If you need a night sensor light to guide you through your nightly adventures then the Xiaomi Mijia Sensor Night Light is an excellent option. Why not choose a cheaper one? First: the sensor is very good, it will notice you under a wide angle and within seven meters. Second: The lamp itself is pleasant for a night light, with the right color temperature and two brightness settings and Third: With the elegant design the night sensor light will not annoy you when you hang it in sight. Next to that, the lamp is very energy efficient.
